DSS Arrests Ogun Lawmaker, Five Others Over Cult Clashes

A serving member of the Ogun State House of Assembly, Hon. Damilare Bello Mohammed, has been arrested by the Department of State Security (DSS) for his alleged involvement in the deadly cult clashes that rocked Sagamu town last weekend.

The lawmaker, who represents Sagamu State Constituency 1 on the platform of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), was nabbed alongside five other suspected cultists at his official residence on Thursday morning.

According to a statement issued by the Chief Press Secretary to Governor Dapo Abiodun, ‘Lekan Adeniran, the DSS operatives had tracked the six suspects to the lawmaker’s residence, where he was allegedly providing shelter to them.

The statement said that many dangerous weapons, including guns, were recovered from the suspects, who are currently undergoing interrogation in DSS custody.

The cult clashes, which occurred between rival groups on Saturday and Sunday, claimed the lives of eight persons and left several others injured.

The statement also recalled that Hon. Bello was earlier arrested by the DSS in February this year for allegedly masterminding the violent protest that took place in Sagamu over the naira redesign policy by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).

The protest led to the vandalisation of about 10 banks and other public infrastructure by irate youths.

The statement said that the state government would not tolerate any act of lawlessness and criminality in the state and urged the people to cooperate with the security agencies to maintain peace and order.
