Danfo Driver Stabs LASTMA Officer, Strips Naked in Lagos

A commercial bus driver was arrested on Monday for stabbing a Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) officer and causing public disorder in Surulere area of Lagos.

The driver, whose identity was not disclosed, was driving a Volkswagen ‘T4’ bus with number plate LSR 966 YE, when he was stopped by LASTMA officers for picking up passengers on the expressway around Costain Round-About. This act violated the traffic rules and caused obstruction to other road users.

According to Olajide Olukoga, the leader of the LASTMA enforcement team, the driver resisted arrest and attacked him with a knife. He said: “Our enforcement team had successfully apprehended the driver while trying to escape after dangerous driving, brought out a knife and stabbed me in the process.”

Olukoga sustained a deep cut on his arm and was rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment. The driver, on the other hand, stripped himself naked and created a scene before he was overpowered by policemen from Iponri Police Station. The police also recovered a cutlass and another knife from his bus.

The driver is currently in police custody and will face charges of assault and breach of peace. The Lagos State Government has warned drivers to abide by the traffic laws and respect the authority of LASTMA officers, who are working to ensure smooth flow of traffic in the state.
