Police Rescue Robber After Mob Set Him On Fire For Snatching Phone

A suspected armed robber was rescued by the police after he was set on fire by an angry mob in Warri, Delta State, on Tuesday.

The man, whose identity is yet to be confirmed, had allegedly snatched a phone and a handbag from an elderly woman on Airport Road, and pushed her out of a tricycle, locally known as a “Keke.”

The woman survived the attack, but the robber was chased and caught by some residents who witnessed the incident.

According to an eyewitness, the robber was well-known for causing trouble in Warri and its environs. He said the mob decided to take the law into their own hands and set him ablaze.

“They poured petrol on him and set him on fire. He was screaming and begging for mercy, but nobody listened to him. He was lucky that the police came on time and rescued him. If not, he would have died,” the eyewitness said.

The police arrived at the scene and took the robber to Enerhen Police Station, where he is currently receiving treatment for his burns.

The police spokesperson for Delta State, DSP Bright Edafe, confirmed the incident and warned the public against jungle justice.

He said the police are investigating the matter and will ensure that justice is served.

He also appealed to anyone with useful information about the robbery or the identity of the suspect to contact the nearest police station.
