Students Loan 2024: Tinubu Promises To End Academic Strikes With Students Loan Scheme

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has announced that his administration will launch a new Students Loan Scheme in January 2024, which he said will put an end to the frequent industrial actions in the nation’s academic sector. He made this declaration on Monday at the 29th edition of the annual Nigerian Economic Summit, hosted by the Nigerian Economic Summit Group (NESG), at the Transcorps Hilton, Abuja.

The president, who spoke on the theme “Building Partnerships for Resilience”, said that his government was committed to stabilising the economy and collaborating with all stakeholders, especially the private sector. He emphasised the need to create a sustainable credit scheme that would enable Nigerians to access loans for education, housing, and consumer goods, and also support the anti-corruption campaign.

“By January 2024, the new Students Loan Programme must commence. To the future of our children and students we’re saying no more strikes. There must be consumer credit, scheme will have to come to effect as soon as possible. I thank my team and my colleagues to build this programme, develop it now. We cannot talk about anti-corruption when you have to look for cash to buy a car, when there’s no mortgage for homeownership,” he said.

The president also highlighted some of the achievements of his administration in the areas of security, infrastructure, agriculture, health, and social welfare. He said that his government had restored peace and stability in the country, improved the power supply and road network, boosted food production and exports, increased access to health care and vaccines, and provided cash transfers and palliatives to the poor and vulnerable.

He called on the private sector to partner with his government in creating more jobs and opportunities for the youth, who he described as the “engine of growth” for the nation. He also urged the civil society and the media to support his administration’s efforts to transform the country and ensure good governance.

The Nigerian Economic Summit is an annual event that brings together policymakers, business leaders, academics, and other stakeholders to discuss and proffer solutions to the economic challenges facing the country. The summit also features various plenary sessions, panel discussions, workshops, exhibitions, and networking opportunities. The theme of this year’s summit is “Building Partnerships for Resilience”.
