Lagos Set To Increase Trips On Electrified Blue Line

LAMATA plans to boost rail trips, deploy electric buses

The Lagos Metropolitan Transport Authority (LAMATA) has announced its plans to increase the number of trips on the Blue Line rail corridor from 54 to 76 per day by the end of the year. The Blue Line rail is a 13-kilometre route that runs from Marina to Okoko.

The Managing Director of LAMATA, Abimbola Akinajo, made this known at a press conference in Lagos to mark the 20th anniversary of the agency. She also revealed the timelines for the completion of the second phase of the Blue Line project and the commencement of operation on the Red Line project.

According to her, the second phase of the Blue Line project, which covers the stretch from Mile 2 to Okoko, has already started and is expected to be completed in 2027. She said the project would enhance connectivity and mobility in the state.

She also said that the Red Line project, which is a 37-kilometre rail route that connects Agbado to Marina with 13 stations, would start commercial operation in the second quarter of 2024. She said the infrastructure work on the project would be completed by December this year.

Akinajo also disclosed that the agency would deploy 1,000 electric buses (EBs) on the roads in the next 24 months, as part of its efforts to explore alternative fuel for urban transportation and reduce greenhouse emissions. She said the EBs would be integrated with the rail and bus rapid transit (BRT) systems to provide seamless and efficient service to the commuters.
