Turkish Leagues Suspended After Club President Punches Referee

Turkish football has been plunged into crisis after a referee was attacked by a club president on the pitch following a dramatic late equaliser.

Halil Umut Meler, a top international referee, was punched by MKE Ankaragucu president Faruk Koca after his team drew 1-1 with Caykur Rizespor in the Super Lig on Monday.

The violent incident, which also involved other assailants, left Meler with a minor fracture and bleeding around his left eye. He was taken to hospital for treatment and observation.

The Turkish FA (TFF) reacted swiftly by suspending all leagues indefinitely, calling the attack a “night of shame” for Turkish football.

Fifa president Gianni Infantino also condemned the violence and urged the authorities to ensure the safety and security of match officials, players, fans and staff.

Koca, who also needed medical attention, was detained by the police along with others involved in the brawl. Turkey’s minister of internal affairs, Ali Yerlikaya, said he “strongly condemned” the incident and vowed to take legal action.
