Psychiatric Hospital In Lagos Sees Surge In Patients Amid Economic Woes

The Federal Neuro-psychiatric Hospital, Yaba, has witnessed a 100 per cent increase in the number of psychiatric patients admitted in the hospital in 2023, according to its Chief Medical Director, Dr Olugbenga Owoeye.

Dr Owoeye revealed this at the Annual Score Card presentation, themed: “A Day With the Medical Director”, held at the hospital yesterday.

He said the hospital also recorded a seven per cent increase in new cases and a three per cent increase in follow-up patients, both male and female.

He attributed the rise in admission cases to the growing prevalence of mental health disorders in the country, caused by the current economic difficulties and other social factors.

He said: “It can be inferred that in 2023, the total number of all patients’ attendance increased by three per cent. There was a seven per cent increase in new cases attended, compared to no increase in 2022.

“We also have 100 per cent increase in admission cases in which the drug abuse cases is 10 per cent increase and discharge cases is reduced by 10 per cent.”

Dr Owoeye also highlighted the achievements of the hospital in the past year, which included the completion of the administrative building, Yaba, the rehabilitation of internal roads and drainages in Yaba and Oshodi annex of the hospital, the upgrading of the physiotherapy department, the ongoing construction work on the Tele-Psychiatric Centre and the out-patient clinic in the hospital, among others.
