Car Thief Escapes Lynching, Says He Wanted To Build A House

A man who tried to steal a Honda Civic car from a market in Minna, Niger State, was almost lynched by an angry mob on Thursday.

The suspect, identified as Abubakar Mohammed, 40, was rescued by the police, who arrested him for the attempted theft.

Mohammed, who lives in Tudun-Fulani, Bosso Local Government Area, admitted that he used a fake key to start the car, with registration number KAG 371 AA, at the Kure Ultra Modern Market.

He said he intended to sell the car to his regular buyer, Bashir Mohammed, in Kaduna State.

He also confessed that he had previously stolen and sold a red Honda Civic car from the same market in March 2023, for N200,000, which he invested in a shoe business in Kano State.

He claimed that he needed more money to buy a land and build a house in Wushishi, as he was planning to get married soon.

The Niger State Police Command spokesperson, DSP Wasiu Abiodun, confirmed the incident, saying that the case was being investigated by the State Criminal Investigation Department, SCID, Minna.

He added that the police were working to arrest Bashir Mohammed, who was suspected to be involved in receiving stolen vehicles.
