How Ivory Coast stun Nigeria with late comeback to win AFCON 2024

Ivory Coast scored two goals in the last 10 minutes to overturn a 1-0 deficit and beat Nigeria 2-1 in the Africa Cup of Nations final on Sunday night in Abidjan.

The hosts, who were playing in their first AFCON final since 2015, looked set to suffer a heartbreaking defeat after William Troost-Ekong’s penalty in the 55th minute gave Nigeria the lead.

The Super Eagles, who were aiming for their fourth continental title, defended resolutely and frustrated the Ivorian attack, led by star striker Wilfried Zaha.

However, the Elephants refused to give up and found a lifeline in the 80th minute, when substitute Maxwel Cornet curled a superb free-kick into the top corner from 25 yards out.

The equalizer sparked wild celebrations among the home fans and players, who sensed a historic opportunity to win the trophy on their own soil.

Nigeria tried to regroup and restore their advantage, but they were dealt a fatal blow in the 88th minute, when Zaha finally broke through and scored the winner with a powerful header from Serge Aurier’s cross.

The final whistle triggered scenes of jubilation and disbelief, as Ivory Coast lifted their third AFCON title and denied Nigeria their first since 2013.

The match was a fitting finale for a thrilling tournament, which saw both teams overcome tough opponents and dramatic moments to reach the showpiece event.

Nigeria had beaten South Africa 4-2 on penalties in the semi-final, after a 1-1 draw in regulation time, while Ivory Coast had edged out DR Congo 1-0 thanks to a late goal from Nicolas Pepe.

Both teams will now turn their attention to the 2024 World Cup qualifiers, where they will hope to carry their momentum and secure a place in Qatar.
