iPhone Obsession Drives Ondo Varsity Student To Murder Female Colleague

AKURE, Nigeria – A 21-year-old final-year student of Adekunle Ajasin University Akungba Akoko (AAUA), Ondo State, has been arrested for allegedly killing a 20-year-old female student of the same institution over her iPhone.

The suspect, identified as Olubodun Sanni, a geology student, was paraded by the Ondo State Police Command on Tuesday, February 13, 2024, at its headquarters in Akure.

The Commissioner of Police, CP Abayomi Oladipo, who briefed the press, said Sanni confessed to stabbing the victim, Ifeoluwa Adekunle, a 300-level economics student, in her chest and stealing her iPhone XR.

According to the CP, the incident happened on February 2, 2024, at an off-campus hostel where both Sanni and Adekunle lived as neighbours.

He said the police received a report that Adekunle was found in a pool of blood in her room and was rushed to the university health centre, where she was referred to a specialist hospital in Ikare Akoko. She was later confirmed dead at the hospital.

The CP said the police launched an investigation and discovered that the deceased’s phone was missing. He said the police used modern technology to trace the phone to Sanni, who was arrested and interrogated.

“During interrogation, the suspect confessed that he killed the deceased because he was attracted to her iPhone. He said he entered her room when she was not around, and when she returned, he stabbed her in the chest and ran away with her phone,” the CP said.

He said the suspect also admitted that he sold the phone to another person for N40,000. He said the police recovered the phone and the knife used in the crime from the suspect.

The CP said the suspect would be arraigned in court as soon as the investigation was completed.

He warned students and youths to shun greed and materialism, and to focus on their studies and legitimate means of livelihood.

He also commiserated with the family of the deceased and the management of AAUA over the tragic incident.
