Honest Keke Rider Gets N250m Scholarship From Top Politicians

A 23-year-old Kano-based commercial tricyclist, Awwalu Salisu, who returned N15million left in his keke by a Chadian businessman in 2023, has been rewarded with a N250million scholarship to study up to PhD level at any university of his choice.

Salisu, who was honoured by media group as the Outstanding Young Person of the Year 2023, received the scholarship offer from two prominent politicians who were also recognised at the same event.

The first to make the offer was Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP) and the Politician of the Year 2023 Award. Obi praised Salisu for his honesty and integrity, and offered him a scholarship to study at Baze University in Abuja up to PhD level.

However, Obi’s gesture was soon matched and surpassed by Mohammed Umar Bago, the governor of Niger State and the co-winner of the Governor of the Year Award. Bago, who belongs to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), jokingly said that he could not let the Labour Party outdo the APC in rewarding Salisu.

Bago then announced a whopping N250million scholarship for Salisu, saying that he would get N50million each from him, President Bola Tinubu, his ministers, the APC Governors Forum and the Niger State government.

Bago said that Salisu’s act of honesty was an inspiration for all young Nigerians, and that he deserved to pursue his dreams and aspirations with the best education possible.

Salisu, who was overwhelmed by the generosity of the politicians, thanked them for their kindness and said that he would use the opportunity to improve himself and his community. He said that he was happy to be recognised for his honesty, and that he hoped to inspire others to do the right thing.
