Daylight Highway Robbery: Nigerian Police Accused of Extorting N100,000 from Cyprus Returnee

In a shocking incident that unfolded in the early hours of the morning, a Nigerian man, Rahmon Olamilekan Adekunle, fell victim to an alleged act of extortion by policemen in Lagos. The incident occurred at the Berger tunnel leading to Magodo, where Mr. Adekunle was intercepted by plainclothes officers.

According to Mr. Adekunle, who had just returned from Cyprus, the officers seized his phone and, upon discovering his recent arrival in Nigeria, coerced him into transferring N100,000 to a Point of Sale (POS) operator. The urgency of the situation was heightened by the fact that Mr. Adekunle was en route to dropping his girlfriend off for an examination.

With no means to contact family or authorities due to the confiscation of his phone, Mr. Adekunle felt compelled to comply with the demand to ensure his girlfriend would not miss her exam. Efforts to reach out to the State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, have so far been met with silence.

This alarming event raises serious concerns about the conduct of police officers and the safety of citizens on Lagos roads. The identity of the involved officers and their station remains unknown, leaving Mr. Adekunle and the public awaiting answers and action from law enforcement authorities.
