FIFA and CAF Accredited Photojournalist Abdul Momoh Attacked at NPFL Oriental Derby

Enugu, Nigeria — Renowned photojournalist Abdul Momoh, accredited by FIFA and CAF, was attacked by irate fans during the NPFL Oriental Derby between Rangers and Enyimba at Enugu Stadium on Sunday evening.

The incident occurred immediately after the center referee awarded a penalty to Rangers in the added minutes, prompting fans to storm the pitch.

Momoh, who currently serves as the Ex Officio Two of Kwara SWAN, confirmed the attack during a phone interview with Ayodeji Ismail around 9 PM Sunday night. He reported that his camera was severely damaged, and his lens was stolen by the assailants who had disguised themselves as spectators.

“The moment the penalty was awarded, chaos ensued. Fans invaded the pitch, and in the midst of the commotion, I was attacked. My camera was destroyed, and my lens was stolen,” Momoh recounted.

The incident has been reported to the nearest police station and the SWAN Chairman of the Enugu Chapter for further investigation.

This attack follows Momoh’s recent coverage of the World Cup qualifier between Nigeria and South Africa in Uyo last Friday, demonstrating his dedication to reporting key football events despite the risks involved.

Authorities and football governing bodies are expected to take serious action to address the growing concerns over safety at football matches and ensure the protection of journalists and other professionals involved in the sport.
