CHOLERA OUTBREAK SPREADS PANIC: DEATH TOLL HITS 37 AS LAGOS RECORDS 401 CASES

A cholera outbreak is causing widespread panic as it spreads across 30 states in Nigeria, including Lagos and Ogun. The death toll has risen to 37, with Lagos recording 401 cases and Ogun confirming one death and 14 cases.

The outbreak has been attributed to the ingestion of the Vibrio cholerae bacteria, often found in contaminated water and food. Cholera can cause severe diarrhea and dehydration, with the severe forms of the disease capable of killing within hours if left untreated.

Lagos Island has been identified as the epicenter of the outbreak, with Kosofe and Eti Osa also recording high numbers. The rise in cases has been attributed to the large gatherings that took place during the Sallah festivities.

The Nigerian government has initiated a water quality analysis in response to the outbreak, with teams dispatched to collect water samples and investigate the presence of Vibrio cholerae in the affected areas.

The Federal Ministry of Water Resources and Sanitation has also intensified community sensitization efforts, promoting campaigns against open defecation and encouraging the public to take precautions to protect themselves and their families by boiling or treating drinking water before consumption.

The World Health Organization has reported a spike in cholera cases in several regions of the world, with almost 195,000 cases and over 1,900 deaths reported in 24 countries since the start of 2024.

Residents are advised to maintain good hygiene and avoid drinking water from unknown sources. The government has assured citizens that cholera treatment is provided free of charge at all public health facilities.
