ONE-ARM MAN: ATHAN ACHONU EMERGES L.P GOVERNORSHIP CANDIDATE FOR IMO

In a major political upset, Senator Athan Achonu has emerged victorious as the governorship candidate for Imo State’s Labour Party (LP).

This result was announced following the LP’s hotly contested governorship primaries, which took place in Owerri on Saturday.

Returning officer and Abia-State governor-elect Alex Otti confirmed Senator Achonu’s victory, citing his 134 votes victory over his closest rival, Major General Jack Ogunewe, who scored 121.

Senator Achonu, a former PDP representative for Imo North in the Senate, is no stranger to controversy.

In 2015, his election was nullified by the tribunal based on a petition from the Accord Party candidate, Rita Ibemere Okoroafor.

The tribunal alleged that the exclusion of the Accord Party logo and other symbols on the ballot paper for the senatorial zone constituted a breach of the Electoral Act 2010.

A new election was ordered, which Senator Achonu subsequently lost to the APC candidate, Benjamin Uwajumogu.

Despite his political rollercoaster, the fortunes of this Ehime Mbaino LGA native seem to be on the rise as he unites with Labour Party to contest for the Imo State governorship in the forthcoming election.
