I Sack My Perm. Sec For His Inability To Calculate Gratuities – Gov. Umahi

Governor David Umahi of Ebonyi State has announced that he retired a permanent secretary in the state’s civil service prematurely as the official failed to calculate civil servants’ gratuities.

The governor made this assertion while swearing in new permanent secretaries and members of the state’s Public Complaints and Anti-Corruption Commission.

The deputy governor reportedly asked Umahi to reverse the decision, but Umahi declined, noting that even if the permanent secretary could not calculate the gratuity, they should provide the elements that make it up.

He added that the issue of civil servants’ gratuity in Ebonyi was worrisome, and permanent secretaries in the state are among the best in the country.

Governor Umahi advised the sworn-in officials to maintain the high standards in the state and read widely to improve their performances.

He added that they should set performance exams for themselves to improve their competencies and become proficient in their duties.

Umahi explained that he had attained engineering proficiency by studying the Israelis back in 1987 when he was tutored in an Israeli firm on a monthly salary of N650.

He further noted that he diligently learnt from his mentors during the period and could debate favorably with a professor in the engineering field, even though he only had a first degree in engineering.

The governor concluded his speech by reminding the new appointees that public duties or services should be regarded as personal business, and they should work to maintain high standards of service delivery to the people.
