Adamawa Polls: INEC REC in Police Custody As Investigations Continue

The Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) for Adamawa State, Barrister Hudu Yunusa-Ari, has been arrested and is currently in police custody following allegations of impropriety in the gubernatorial supplementary elections in the state.

The arrest was made by the Police Election Planning, Monitoring, and Evaluation Team in Abuja on Tuesday, May 2, 2023.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had called for Barrister Ari’s arrest and investigation after he alleged to have announced the candidate of the All Progressives Congress winner of the gubernatorial elections during the supplementary polls.

Other officials and individuals implicated in the matter are also being questioned by the team.

The Inspector-General of Police has assured Nigerians that every individual involved in the matter will be investigated and possibly prosecuted in line with the provisions of the law.

He has expressed the commitment of the force to ensure justice is served, and all guilty parties are brought to justice.

The Adamawa State supplementary elections had sparked controversy as the opposition party, People’s Democratic Party (PDP), had accused the ruling party of rigging the elections.

The allegations of impropriety against the REC only served to fuel opposition claims of fraud, leading to public outcry and calls for investigations into the matter.

The arrest of the REC, along with ongoing investigations into other officials and individuals implicated in the allegedly fraudulent elections, is a welcome development in the quest for justice and fairness.

Nigerians are keenly watching to see how the matter will be resolved and the guilty parties brought to justice in accordance with the rule of law.
