Egypt Sends Nigerian Students Back to Sudan Over ‘Unruly Conduct’

Two students who tried to evade security checks at an Egyptian airport have caused trouble for hundreds of Nigerians who were fleeing from Sudan.

The Federal Government had arranged for Nigerians in Sudan to travel by road to Egypt and then fly back home, due to the closure of Sudanese airspace.

However, the Egyptian authorities refused to let them enter their country for over a week, leaving them stranded.

Some of the stranded Nigerians have been evacuated, while others are still waiting.

According to a recording obtained by Daily Trust, on Friday, a government official said that two students who did not have passports or Emergency Travel Certificates (ETCs) were told to stay behind, but they secretly joined their colleagues who had been cleared.

“The Egyptian authorities are angry. They have ordered all the stranded Nigerians to go back to Sudan. They have to get exit permits and then get new permits to come back to Egypt. This will delay them for almost 10 hours,” the official said.

The official also said that a child had gone missing in the confusion.

“Also, a child sneaked into Egypt. We cannot find him. The two students will face legal actions.”
