Argentina’s football star Lionel Messi has won the Laureus World Sports Awards for sportsman of the year.

Messi, who led his country to a historic World Cup triumph in Qatar, also received the team of the year award on behalf of Argentina, who defeated France in a thrilling penalty shootout in the final.

The 35-year-old attended the ceremony in Paris shortly after he rejoined Paris Saint-Germain following a club suspension.

The Argentine has made history by becoming the only footballer to ever receive the award twice. He is also the only football player to ever win it

He said: “I am honoured to receive this special recognition, especially as the Laureus World Sports Awards are held in Paris this year, the city that has embraced my family since we moved here in 2021. I want to thank all my teammates, both from the national team and at PSG — I could not have done any of this without them and I am happy to share everything with them.”
