The Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) middleweight title holder, Israel Adesanya, is facing controversy after reports emerged that his ex-girlfriend is demanding half of his net worth.

Adesanya, who reportedly dated Charlotte Powdrell for a long time, has never been married to her.

Powdrell’s demand for half of Adesanya’s financial fortune is seen by many as outrageous, including some of his peers in the MMA world.

UFC fighter Sean O’Malley has criticized Powdrell’s demands on his podcast, conveying his view that a non-marital partner asking for so much money is “absolutely ridiculous.”

While every relationship is different, he suggests that if, for instance, Powdrell had been Adesanya’s sole caregiver for many years, only then a legitimate case could be made for claiming half of his wealth.

Adesanya, through a combination of his elite fighting skills and business wisdom, has built an empire, and Powdrell believes that she played a fundamental role in his career and should, therefore, share in the spoils.

Although the details of the pair’s finances and agreement are undisclosed, Powdrell’s legal action initiated an ethical and legal debate on what is deemed obligatory and reasonable in such situations.

Many fans and commentators appear to agree with Adesanya and O’Malley’s view that Powdrell is trying to exploit his fame and fortune rather than the time and devotion they shared.

While it’s possible that Powdrell could have a valid claim if their arrangement and the support she gave him could be proven, it’s still unclear how the lawsuit will pan out.

This case has once again highlighted that wealthy athletes are susceptible to high-profile personal and financial problems.

As Adesanya gears up to defend his title against the winner of Dricus du Plessis and Robert Whittaker, this particular issue may not disturb his focus, but it’s an embarrassing distraction he certainly could have done without.
