University of Ilorin Teaching Hospitals (UITH) also joining the ongoing strike by Nigeria Association of residents doctor which will end Monday, May 22.

Dr. Ijaya Mubarak, the chairman of the Association of Resident Doctors at the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital, has urged the federal government to consider the needs of resident doctors in Nigeria.

When discussing the ongoing strike, which includes resident doctors at the UITH as well as the national body of the Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors, Doctor Ijaya made the call.

Recall that the Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors had earlier announced a five-day warning strike after the Federal Government allegedly failed to comply with its requests.

The doctors are requesting a 200 percent increase in the Consolidated Medical Salary Structure immediately from the present gross salaries of doctors.

While some Nigerians have cautioned the ministry not to treat the doctors the same way it treated the ASUU strike, the minister of labor and employment Chris Ngige has threatened the doctors that no work, no pay will apply.

In an interview, some participants expressed concern that, should the federal government handle the situation poorly, the rate of casualties would spike.

Government teaching hospitals and federal medical facilities all around the nation are operating at a standstill due to the Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors’ five-day warning strike.
