Aníkúlápó Series: Kunle Afolayan and Netflix Set to Reimagine Yoruba Epic for Modern Audiences

In a move that is set to reshape the landscape of Nigerian entertainment, acclaimed filmmaker Kunle Afolayan took to his Instagram page today, August 15, 2023, to announce a groundbreaking collaboration with global streaming giant Netflix.

The announcement follows a wave of recent successes in Nigerian storytelling, signaling a vibrant future for the country’s creative industry.

Building on the momentum generated by the recent launch of Femi Adebayo’s Yoruba epic “Jagun Jagun” on August 10th and the star-studded event “Lights, Camera.. Naija!” that took place in Lagos on August 13th, Netflix is set to take Nigeria’s storytelling prowess to new heights.

With an exciting and diverse slate of upcoming films and series, the streaming service is poised to captivate audiences both within Nigeria and around the world.

One of the highly anticipated projects revealed in this lineup is the Aníkúlápó series, a spinoff of the beloved Yoruba epic “Aníkúlápó.” Following the success of “Aníkúlápó the movie,” director and producer Kunle Afolayan is set to helm this four-part sequel.

However, the series will feature a star-studded cast, including returning favorites Sola Sowobale, Kunle Remi, and Bimbo Ademoye, alongside Owobo Ogunde, Gabriel Afolayan, Lateef Adedimeji, Eyiyemi Afolayan, Uzee Usman, Ovinda Sanni, and Taiwo Hassan.

Ben Amadasun, Netflix’s Vice President of Content in the Middle East and Africa, expressed enthusiasm for the collaboration, stating, “We are fortunate to bring incredible projects from some of Nigeria’s most prolific creators. Collaborating with them has enabled us to showcase Nigeria’s immense storytelling talent and creativity and make Netflix the home of the best Nigerian stories for our audience in Nigeria and around the world.”

The forthcoming lineup of Nigerian films and series, set to debut on Netflix in the upcoming months, has sparked anticipation and excitement among viewers. As the country’s entertainment industry continues to flourish, eyes are eagerly fixed on the screen as audiences await the latest offerings that promise to transport them into the heart of Nigerian narratives.

With the fusion of Netflix’s global reach and Nigeria’s rich storytelling heritage, this collaboration marks a significant milestone in the ongoing evolution of entertainment, further solidifying the nation’s position as a powerhouse in the world of creativity and innovation.
