Abuja building collapse claims lives, traps many

A tragic incident occurred on Wednesday night when a multi-storey building at Lagos Street in Garki, Abuja came crashing down during a heavy rainstorm. The building, which contained several apartments and shops, was fully occupied at the time of the collapse.

According to an eyewitness who spoke to an online platform Pristinegist,  dozens of people are feared dead or trapped under the rubble. He described the scene as one of chaos and despair, with people crying and running around in the rain.

The Federal Emergency Management Authority (FEMA) confirmed the collapse and said that 37 people had been rescued alive, while two others had died from their injuries. The rescued victims were taken to various hospitals in Abuja for treatment.

The Director General of FEMA, Dr. Abbass Idriss, said in a statement on Thursday morning that rescue efforts were still ongoing, in collaboration with other agencies such as the Federal Road Safety Corps,(FRSC), FCT Police Command, and the VIO. He said that FEMA was waiting for excavators to intensify the search and ensure that no one was left behind.

“We are doing our best to save lives and recover bodies from the collapsed building. We appeal to the public to stay calm and cooperate with the rescue team,” he said.
