Adeleke VS Oyetola: Supreme Court Delivers Judgement Today

The legal battle over the Osun State governorship election of July 16, 2022 will reach its climax today (Tuesday) as the Supreme Court delivers its verdict on the matter.

The election was won by Senator Ademola Adeleke of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) who defeated the incumbent Governor Gboyega Oyetola of the All Progressives Congress (APC) by a margin of 28,344 votes.

However, Oyetola and his party challenged the outcome of the poll at the Election Petitions Tribunal, alleging irregularities and malpractices.

On January 27, 2023, the tribunal ruled in favour of Oyetola and nullified Adeleke’s victory, saying that he scored 314,931 lawful votes while Adeleke had 290,266.

Adeleke and his party were dissatisfied with the tribunal’s decision and appealed to the Court of Appeal, which reversed the ruling on March 24 and reinstated Adeleke as the winner.

Oyetola and his party were not happy with the appellate court’s judgment and approached the Supreme Court, which heard the case on Monday and reserved judgment for today.

Both parties are hopeful that the apex court will uphold their claims and affirm their mandate to govern the South-Western state.
