Anthrax Disease: FG Advises Public To Desist From Consuming Ponmo

The Federal Ministry of Agriculture has issued an alarming advisory to the public in Nigeria urging them to stop consuming PONMO, smoked and bush meat.

The advice came following the recent outbreak of the deadly anthrax disease in neighbouring countries within the West African sub-region, namely Northern Ghana, bordering Burkina Faso and Togo.

Anthrax is a severe illness caused by a bacterium called Bacillus anthracis, which can affect both animals and humans.

The disease’s symptoms in humans can include breathing difficulties, blood poisoning, and in severe cases, death.

This contagious disease can be contracted from infected animals, especially cows, sheep, and goats.

The Nigerian government, through the Federal Ministry of Agriculture, has warned the public, especially those living in rural areas where animal husbandry is prevalent, to avoid handling, slaughtering, or consuming animals infected with anthrax.

They are also advised to avoid buying meat from unknown sources at this time.

The Ministry has also urged all meat vendors in the country to desist from selling contaminated meat and make sure their meat is inspected before selling.

In addition, the farmers are highly advised to engage in good animal husbandry practices, promptly report any suspected outbreak, and seek professional help from veterinary specialists when needed.

In conclusion, the outbreak of anthrax in neighbouring countries had sounded the alarm bells for Nigeria as well.

The Nigerian Ministry of Agriculture’s advisory was timely in alerting the public to the dangers of consuming PONMO, smoked and bush meat.

The government’s prompt action will hopefully reduce the risk of anthrax spreading within Nigeria and safeguard the health of its citizens, especially those living in rural areas.
