Arsenal FC Secure £38m Deal to Sign Jurrien Timber from Ajax

Arsenal FC has completed the signing of Jurrien Timber from Ajax in a deal worth around £38 million.

Timber, a Dutch defender who emerged from the Ajax academy, has agreed to a five-year contract with the Gunners. Prior to joining Mikel Arteta’s side, the 22-year-old made 160 appearances for Ajax.

The transfer involves an initial fee of slightly over £34 million, with additional payments based on performance-related add-ons. Timber successfully underwent a medical examination and finalized personal terms before the official announcement of his move.

Arsenal had long pursued Timber, and he becomes their second signing of the summer transfer window, following the arrival of Kai Havertz for £65 million. Additionally, a £105 million deal to secure West Ham’s Declan Rice is reportedly nearing completion.

Although primarily brought in as a right-back, Timber offers versatility as he can also play as a center-back.

However, he has previously attracted interest from Manchester United and has earned 15 caps for the Netherlands.

Timber featured prominently in the 2022 World Cup, starting in four out of five matches before the Dutch team’s exit at the quarter-finals stage against Argentina.

Despite his young age, Timber brings a wealth of experience with nearly 200 senior appearances for both club and country. Arsenal sees him as a valuable addition due to his blend of youth and experience. Moreover, his adaptability is highly regarded, having primarily played as a center-back for Ajax in a back four formation and as a right-back in a back three for the Dutch national team. He is even capable of slotting into midfield when required.

Arteta places great importance on full-backs who can contribute to the team’s build-up play by moving into central areas when in possession. Timber’s qualities align with this vision. Notably, the Dutchman is recognized for his defensive prowess, excelling in tackling and aerial duels. However, his greatest strength lies in his exceptional passing ability.

In the previous Eredivisie season, Timber led the league in touches and passes, including forward passes. This demonstrates his ability to retain possession and initiate attacking moves, making him an ideal fit for Arsenal’s style of play.

Timber expressed his joy at joining Arsenal, attributing his lifelong support for the club to his brothers, who were devoted Arsenal fans. He admired the team’s prominent players and distinctive style, with Robin van Persie and Thierry Henry being his personal favorites.

Meanwhile, Manager Mikel Arteta conveyed his excitement about Timber’s arrival, emphasizing his versatility and the quality he brings to the squad.

While acknowledging Timber’s youth, Arteta commended his achievements, including multiple appearances in major international tournaments and his success in winning trophies with Ajax. Arteta eagerly anticipates integrating Timber into the team and utilizing his talents in the upcoming season and beyond.
