ASUU Issues Three-Week Ultimatum to Government Amidst Looming Crisis

In an emergency press conference held at the ASUU Secretariat in Dutse, Jigawa State, Comrade Salim Ahmed, Chairperson of the ASUU Federal University Dutse (FUD) Branch, delivered a stern warning to the Federal Government. The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has set a three-week deadline for the government to address their demands and avert a potential industrial action.

Ahmed emphasized that the present administration has consistently ignored ASUU’s leadership since its inception in May 2023. Despite efforts to engage in dialogue, the government has failed to address critical issues related to members’ welfare, university autonomy, funding for revitalization, and the proliferation of public universities.

The renegotiation of the FGN/ASUU 2009 agreement remains a core concern, encompassing issues such as withheld salaries, inadequate payment systems (IPPIS), and the adoption of UTAS. ASUU members across branches believe that the government’s reluctance to address these issues necessitates urgent action.

Within the next three weeks, ASUU plans to mobilize its members and sensitize the public about the gravity of the situation. Ahmed urged discerning minds to advocate for government intervention to prevent an avoidable crisis in Nigeria’s already fragile university system.
