Centuries-Old Trees Collapse on Traders in Edo: 4 Killed, Several Injured (See Photos)

Edo State, July 9, 2024

A devastating tragedy unfolded at Jattu Market in Etsako West Local Government Area of Edo State on Monday, claiming the lives of four individuals and leaving several others injured. The calamity occurred when ancient trees, estimated to be over 100 years old, collapsed during heavy rainfall.

Fatal Morning Incident

Between 8:00 AM and 8:30 AM, as traders were setting up their stalls amid the rain, windstorms accompanied the downpour and uprooted the towering trees. The sudden collapse trapped people seeking shelter under the trees or nearby shops.

Confirmation and Response

Mr. Marvellous Zibiri, Chairman of Etsako West Local Government Council, confirmed the tragic event. He learned of the incident from his vice chairman during the rainfall. “Four individuals lost their lives in this unfortunate incident,” Zibiri stated. The deceased have been transported to the mortuary, while those injured are receiving treatment in hospitals.

Gratitude Amid Grief

Zibiri expressed gratitude that the casualty count wasn’t higher. He attributed this fortunate outcome to the early morning rain, which deterred many traders from arriving at the market before the trees fell. Jattu Market, the largest in Edo North, draws traders from across the state and neighbouring areas.

Council’s Commitment

While extending condolences to the families of the deceased, Zibiri assured the community that the council would repair the damaged structures and take proactive measures. The removal of all old trees from the market area is part of their commitment to prevent such tragedies in the future.
