The Colleges of Education Academic Staff Union (COEASU) has expressed its dissatisfaction with the recent 40 percent pay increase for federal workers, claiming that its members were excluded.

While COEASU praised the government for recognizing civil servants as “the drivers of government policies,” it expressed disappointment at the exclusion of lecturers and other tertiary education staff, despite the sector’s various unions’ appeals for salary increases.

However, COEASU accused the government of attempting to sow discord among Nigerian workers and preventing them from speaking out on issues affecting their welfare.

COEASU noted that lecturers and other tertiary education workers have not received a salary increase since 2010, and the union has attempted to renegotiate the 2010 agreement, which should have been reviewed every three years.

The PUNCH previously reported that civil servants began receiving unique allowances under the Consolidated Public Service Salary Structure.
