Cute Abiola To Face Prosecution Over Police Uniform Skits

Nigerian comedian, Abdulgafar Abiola, popularly known as “Cute Abiola,” has found himself entangled in a legal battle following the release of two skits on his social media handles on July 20th and 24th, 2023.

The Nigerian Police Force (NPF)  expressed strong condemnation for the comedian’s actions, today on their social media platforms asserting that such conduct goes against the law.

The skits have caused significant controversy due to their disrespectful and derogatory portrayal of the police uniform, leading to accusations of criminal behavior and potential prosecution.

According to Section 251 of the Criminal Code and Section 133 of the Penal Code Law, individuals are prohibited from demeaning the police institution or violating the provisions concerning the use of police uniforms.

In response to the public uproar, the NPF has announced that it will conduct a thorough investigation into the matter. Depending on the outcome, Abdulgafar Abiola may face legal consequences for his deliberate portrayal of the police uniform, which is considered a criminal offense.

However, the NPF has emphasized its commitment to upholding the sanctity of the police uniform and maintaining the dignity of its officers who proudly wear it in service to the nation.

Meanwhile, Desecrating the uniform or any accoutrements associated with it is seen as a serious offense that undermines the integrity of the institution and its dedicated members.

Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the Force Public Relations Officer, issued a stern warning to all skit makers and filmmakers to be mindful of their creative expressions, especially when it concerns law enforcement institutions.

He further said that any act or media content that disrespects or brings disrepute to the police force will not be taken lightly, and legal actions will be pursued to ensure accountability.

The NPF aims to safeguard public trust and confidence in law enforcement agencies, and they call on all members of the public, including media personalities, to exercise their freedom of expression responsibly. While freedom of expression is valued, it should not be used as a means to tarnish the image of revered institutions.

As the investigation progresses, the eyes of the public remain fixed on the legal outcome, eagerly awaiting a resolution that upholds justice while respecting the rights of all parties involved.
