Cyber Sweep: EFCC’s Dawn Raid Nets 40 Internet Fraudsters in Akwa Ibom

In a dramatic pre-dawn operation, the Uyo Zonal Command of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) clamped down on suspected cybercriminals, apprehending 40 individuals in Akwa Ibom State. The sting, executed with precision on Thursday, May 30, 2024, targeted two separate locations known to be hotbeds for internet fraud.

The first wave of the operation saw 21 suspects rounded up in Eket, while the second wave resulted in 19 arrests in Ikot Ekpene. The suspects, all male, were caught off-guard as EFCC operatives swooped in, disrupting the alleged fraudulent activities.

A trove of evidence was seized in the raid, including a luxurious Toyota SUV XLE, nine laptops, 64 smartphones, an internet router, and a smartwatch. These items are believed to be instrumental in the suspects’ operations and will form a crucial part of the prosecution’s case.

The EFCC has confirmed that the suspects are currently undergoing a thorough investigation and will face legal proceedings upon its conclusion. This operation marks a significant victory in the ongoing battle against cybercrime in Nigeria, sending a clear message that the EFCC remains vigilant and relentless in its pursuit of justice.
