David De Gea Wins Golden Glove Of The Season

David De Gea, the goalkeeper for Manchester United, has won the Golden Glove award for the 2022-23 Premier League season

This is the second time the Spaniard has received the award, winning it previously during the 2017-18 campaign.

Despite a turbulent season and concerns about his future at the club, the 32-year-old has played consistently well, achieving his 16th clean sheet during United’s 2-0 win over Wolves.

De Gea currently tops the Premier League’s clean sheet list, but there are still three goalkeepers who could level his tally of 16, and thus share the award.

His closest competitors, Aaron Ramsdale, Nick Pope and Alisson Becker, are all on 13 clean sheets, and De Gea will need to hold current form in his final three games to win the award outright, or else find himself sharing it.

Despite the rumour that his time may be up at Manchester United, De Gea has recently been in talks about a new contract with the club.

His current £375,000-a-week salary is set to take a pay cut to around £200,000-a-week, the same as his fellow United back line, which would align him with other teammates.

De Gea’s inconsistent form and the lack of interest from European clubs, willing to pay him more, led him to believe signing the contract was his best option.

David De Gea is already considered a Manchester United legend in goalkeeping terms. He has won every major domestic trophy and was on the bench for Jose Mourinho’s Europa League triumph in 2017.

With 540 appearances for the club, he already holds the record for the most games played by any Manchester United goalkeeper and is seventh in total fixtures played for the club.

By the time his new contract expires, he will move up the all-time list for Manchester United players and almost certainly leapfrog Wayne Rooney and Gary Neville into the top five.

De Gea’s latest achievement is remarkable given his recent rollercoaster of ups and downs, with some questioning whether he would return to form or potentially move to another club.

However, the goalkeeper has continued to perform at a high level, ensuring that Manchester United have one of the league’s top defences.

Should he remain consistent for the remaining games, De Gea may yet claim the Golden Glove award outright for the 2022-23 season.
