Death Toll Rises To 11:  Inheritance Dispute Ignites Deadly Mosque Bomb Blast

Lagos, May 16, 2024 – The Kano State Police Command has confirmed a harrowing incident at the Gezawa Mosque, where a fire attack orchestrated by Shafiu Abubakar, 38, has tragically claimed the lives of eleven worshippers. The attack, rooted in a bitter inheritance dispute, saw Abubakar lock the doors and set the mosque ablaze, resulting in 17 individuals currently receiving medical treatment.

Abubakar’s confession revealed a revenge plot over what he perceived as being cheated out of his rightful inheritance. This was not his first violent episode; he had previously assaulted two of his brothers in a similar outburst.

The police, led by SP Abdullahi Haruna, have reported that the death toll rose after seven more victims succumbed to their injuries. The suspect is now aiding the police with their investigation, while the community mourns the loss and grapples with the aftermath of the devastating event.

Eyewitness Sadik Kamal recounted the horror as flames took over the mosque, with latecomers frantically working to unlock the doors and rescue those trapped inside. The incident has sent shockwaves through the region, highlighting the dire consequences of familial conflicts and the urgent need for peaceful resolutions.
