FG Is Relocating Ikoyi Prisons To A New Location

The federal government is considering the relocation of the Ikoyi Correctional Centre and other facilities across the country, according to the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo.

Tunji-Ojo announced on Monday during a visit to the Ikoyi prison in Lagos, citing urbanization as a major factor in the decision. He noted that the prison is no longer suited for its current location, stating that “there is no reason for this facility to still be here.”

The minister also highlighted the lack of a sufficient “buffer zone” around the prison, as required by the constitution. He described the current situation as “a security threat.”

The relocation of the Ikoyi Correctional Centre is part of a larger plan to address the issue of urbanization encroaching on correctional facilities across the country. The government is looking to relocate about 29 correctional centres that have been affected by urbanization, to provide a safer and more secure environment for both the facilities and the surrounding communities.

This move is seen as a positive step towards addressing the challenges posed by urbanization and ensuring that correctional facilities can fulfil their intended purpose.
