Fuel Subsidy Removal Hits Sex Workers Hard, One Round Now N500

Kano sex workers are feeling the pinch of fuel subsidy removal, pristinegist reports.

They told Pristinegist on Sunday, August 27, that low patronage had forced them to slash their prices.

Ms Mercy Benjamin said she used to charge N5,000 for an hour of service, but now she settles for N500 or N700.

“Business is not good because of the economic challenges,” she said.

Jennifer, another sex worker, said she was struggling to pay her rent of N5,000 per day.

“Customers are scarce and they offer little money. Before, I could make N5,000 to N10,000 per customer, plus food and drinks. Now, I hardly see three customers in a day,” she said.

She added that some of her colleagues had left the business because they could not afford their rooms.

Ms Helen Ediga at Onitsha Road said she wanted to quit the business if she had another option.

She said she was a single mother of three and her husband had abandoned her for another woman.

“I come out every evening to hustle for my children. Since the fuel subsidy removal, we have been suffering. Sometimes, no one talks to me all day. It is very hard. I wish I had another way of living,” she said.

Pristinegist observed that sex workers who stand along major roads in Sabon Gari were also affected by the situation.

They complained of waiting for hours without getting customers.

The report also said that night clubs, fun centres and bars were recording low patronage as well.
