Germany returns stolen artifacts to Nigeria

Germany has began to return age-long looted artefacts back to Nigeria after decades out of the country.

A total of 22 Benin Bronzes, plaques and sculptures from Benin were returned to Nigeria a few days ago.

According to reports, the step was part of a larger pact between the two countries earlier this year to return about 1,130 artifacts taken from Nigeria.

The artifacts were reportedly looted from the Kingdom of Benin which now accounts for major part of the Southwest region in Nigeria, around 120 years ago.

“Today, we are here to return the Benin Bronzes to where they belong: to the people of Nigeria. We are here to right a wrong. It was wrong to take them, but it was also wrong to keep them,” said Germany’s Foreign Minister, Annalena Baerbock during the handover event of the first 22 bronzes.
