GSM Fraud: ‘No Fall Mugu’, NCC Tells Ibadan Phone Users

Motor spare parts dealers in Ibadan have been made aware of telecom and e-fraud when using their phones by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC).

Ayanbanji Ojo, a spokesman for the NCC, made this statement at the NCC consumers sensitization session on Thursday in Ibadan at the Agodi-Gate motors spare parts market.

The commission, according to Mr. Ojo, had received multiple accusations of financial fraud using telecom networks. He claimed that the market’s vulnerability to events and developments in the telecoms sector was the reason the commission chose to introduce the sensitization campaign with the slogan “Shine Your Eyes, No Fall Mugu.”

He asked them to protect their Subscribers Identification Module (SIM) cards, use strong passwords, be wary of “free gifts” internet links, and follow his online identity theft prevention advice. Mr. Ojo also cautioned them to always exercise caution while participating in investment schemes promoted on telecom platforms.

“The market people are our telecom consumers. Without them, we can not exist as a regulator. The market people deserve to know what is going on in the telecoms space. There have been so many complaints on the loss of money,” stated the NCC spokesman. “So, we need to educate our consumers all the time because we are now in the sustainability of the telecoms industry.”

He also added, “If we do not sustain the telecom consumers, the fraudsters will take advantage of them. As telecom regulator, we advise people to go to their service providers to resolve complaints. But if they are dissatisfied, they can call NCC toll-free number ‘622’ to resolve the issue.”

President of the Ibadan Motor Parts Dealers Association, Moruf Olanrewaju, commended the NCC’s efforts to protect phone users from telecom fraud.
