Heartbreaking Suicide at UNILORIN Linked to Social Media Scam

A tragic incident has unfolded at the University of Ilorin (UNILORIN) involving a student named Sanni Hameedat.

She took her own life after extending a helping hand to a young man she met on Snapchat, lending him a substantial sum of N500,000.

This unfortunate turn of events was confirmed by Rubiks, the private hostel management where she resided before her untimely passing.

According to a statement released by the management on a Wednesday, Hameedat was in the midst of her SIWES program when this incident occurred.

The management cited the cause of her distress as a combination of relentless pressure from the individuals she had lent the money to on Snapchat, coupled with her brother’s inability to provide financial support, which ultimately led to her experiencing severe depression.

In their statement, the management explained, “The tragic suicide can be traced back to financial issues. She was entrusted with a significant sum of money by her mother, and later, she met a young man on Snapchat who claimed his mother was battling breast cancer and urgently needed N500,000.

Touched by compassion and emotion, she decided to help by lending him half of the N1 million intended for her mother. The young man had promised to repay the borrowed money.”

However, when her mother needed the money back, the young man abruptly cut off all contact and blocked her, leaving her deeply distressed. To make up the missing N500,000, she resorted to borrowing money from various apps.

Hameedat managed to gather N450,000 from these loan apps and added her savings of N50,000 to make up the borrowed N500,000.

Tragically, she was reported to have ingested a bottle of the pesticide known as Sniper the night before her demise. Her roommate, who had retired to bed early, woke up in the middle of the night to find her in distress, foaming from her mouth and vomiting.

Alarmed, the roommate sought help, and Hameedat was rushed to UITH but was declared dead.

The Student Union President, Ologundudu Adesunkanmi, popularly known as Royal Prince, confirmed the incident and reported that the university authorities were conducting a comprehensive investigation into this heartbreaking event.

It is indeed a deeply saddening loss for the university community.
