Historic Accord Sealed: South-West Farmers and Herdsmen Forge Path to Harmony

In a landmark move towards peace and agricultural prosperity, farmers and herdsmen in Nigeria’s South-West region have reached a groundbreaking agreement. The Commodities Farmers Organisation Summit, held at the prestigious International Conference Centre of the University of Ibadan, was the setting for the signing of a peace pact that promises to end the longstanding conflicts between these two essential groups.

The pact, signed on Saturday by Segun Dasaolu, Coordinator of Commodities Farmers Organisation in the South-West, and Othman Ngelzarma, President of Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria, marks a new era of cooperation aimed at bolstering food security and fostering unity.

Under the theme ‘Sustainable Food Production in South-West Nigeria: The Way Forward,’ the summit convened farmers and herders from across the six states of the region to address mutual challenges and strategize on government engagement for support and policy development.

Dasaolu emphasized the importance of the agreement, stating, “This is a decisive step to halt the farmers/herders clashes and ensure that South-West farmers can safely return to their farms, thereby promoting food security in our country.”

Ngelzarma echoed these sentiments, affirming, “Peace is the foundation upon which all progress is built. We are committed to working hand-in-hand with farmers to not only enhance food security but also to collaboratively identify and eliminate the threat of kidnappers in our zone and across Nigeria.”

The signing ceremony was graced by prominent figures, including Chief Rashidi Ladoja, former Governor of Oyo State and the Otun Olubadan of Ibadanland, and Folashade Tinubu-Ojo, Iyaloja General and daughter of President Bola Tinubu, who witnessed this historic commitment to peace and prosperity.
