Iran executes first prisoner for crime protest crimes

The Iranian government said it had executed a prisoner convicted for a crime allegedly perpetrated during the country’s ongoing nationwide riots; the first such death penalty carried out by Tehran.

The execution arrives as other detainees also face a possible death sentence for their involvement in the uprisings, which began as a protest against Iran’s morality police and have enlarged into one of the most serious challenges to Iran’s theocratic rule.

Iran has been rocked by protests since the Sept. 16 death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini, who died after being incarcerated by the country’s morality police. As of today, at least 475 people have been killed in the demonstrations amid a heavy-handed security crackdown. According to Human Rights Activists in Iran, over 18,000 have been detained by authorities.
