King Charles battles cancer as royal family rallies around him

The King of England has been diagnosed with a form of cancer, Buckingham Palace has announced.

King Charles, 75, underwent treatment for an enlarged prostate last month, when doctors discovered the cancerous cells.

The palace did not disclose the type or stage of the cancer, but said the King started “regular treatments” on Monday and was “wholly positive” about his recovery.

The King will reduce his public engagements while he undergoes treatment, and senior members of the royal family will take on some of his duties.

He is expected to resume his full constitutional role as head of state as soon as possible, the palace said.

The King broke the news of his diagnosis to his sons, Prince William and Prince Harry, who are both said to be in close contact with their father.

Prince Harry, who lives in the US with his wife Meghan and their children, will fly to the UK to visit his father in the next few days, sources said.

Prince William, who had been helping his wife Catherine, the Princess of Wales, recover from abdominal surgery, will return to public duties later this week.

The King returned to London from his country estate in Sandringham, Norfolk, on Monday morning and began his treatment as an outpatient.

He will continue to perform his official duties as head of state, including signing documents and holding private meetings.

If the King is unable to carry out his functions, “counsellors of state” can be appointed to act on his behalf.

These include Queen Camilla, Prince William, Princess Anne and Prince Edward.

Prince Harry and Prince Andrew are no longer eligible to be counsellors of state, as they have stepped back from their royal roles.

The King’s diagnosis has shocked the nation and sparked an outpouring of support and sympathy for the royal family.

Many people have sent messages of encouragement and prayers for the King’s recovery on social media and through the palace’s website.

The King, who ascended the throne in 2022 after the death of his mother, Queen Elizabeth II, is the longest-serving heir apparent in British history.

He is widely respected for his dedication to public service and his passion for environmental and social causes.
