Landlord’s Son Stabs Tenant To Death Over Parking Space In Lagos

A 36-year-old mini bus driver, Shonibare Oluwasegun, was allegedly stabbed to death by his landlord’s son, Taiye Adebayo, during an argument over parking space, in the Ajah area of Lagos.

The incident happened on Sunday night, November 19, 2023, at No. 24, Adewunmi Close, Ilaje Ajah, where the deceased lived with his wife and three children.

According to eyewitnesses, Oluwasegun, who drove a mini bus popularly known as korope, parked his vehicle in front of his compound, as he usually did, and went to bed. A few minutes later, Adebayo knocked on his door and ordered him to remove his bus from the spot.

Oluwasegun went outside and insisted that the space was his regular parking spot. An argument ensued, during which Adebayo allegedly stabbed Oluwasegun several times in different parts of his body.

Oluwasegun’s elder brother, Shonibare Faid, who confirmed the incident, said he received a call from a private number around 1:29am, informing him that his brother was dead. He said he rushed to the scene and saw his brother’s lifeless body in a pool of blood.

He said he reported the case to the Ajiwe Police Station in Ajah and was told that there were moves to manipulate the case. He said it was not until one of his uncles intervened and spoke with the Divisional Crime Officer, that the police visited the scene of the incident and took pictures of the bus, the building, his brother’s corpse and where he lived with his family.

He said he was told to arrange for an ambulance while the police escorted the corpse to the Yaba Mortuary.

He said he requested for a police report in order to bury his brother according to Islamic rites, but he was told that there was need for an autopsy before the next line of action on how his corpse would be released.

He said all he wanted was justice. He said he heard that Adebayo had stabbed more than three persons before his brother’s case that resulted in his death. He said Adebayo had always gone free in other cases because his family was influential.

Police sources said that the case was being investigated at the Ajah Division but that no arrest had been made since the incident occurred.

The suspect’s parents, other members of the family as well as tenants were said to have fled the building, apparently out of fear of being attacked by an angry mob or arrested by the police, in connection with the matter.
