Lawmakers Take Delivery of N160Billion SUVs Amid Controversy

The halls of Nigeria’s National Assembly are abuzz with activity as lawmakers receive their brand-new Sports Utility Vehicles (SUVs). In a move that has sparked heated debate, legislators in both the Green and Red Chambers are now taking possession of these imported vehicles.

The SUV Saga

The decision to purchase SUVs for each lawmaker and bulletproof vehicles for principal officers has drawn sharp criticism. Citizens accuse parliamentarians of insensitivity, especially given the country’s high cost of living and pressing challenges such as food scarcity and crumbling infrastructure.

The Human Rights Writers Association minced no words, labelling the procurement of SUVs for federal lawmakers as provocative. Families struggle to put three square meals on the table, while hospitals and roads deteriorate across the nation.

Legal Challenges

The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project has taken legal action, seeking an injunction to halt the acquisition of exotic cars pending court hearings. Their argument: lawmakers should prioritize public welfare over personal comfort.

However, the Senate stands firm, defending the necessity of these vehicles for legislative operations. Meanwhile, the House of Representatives has quietly begun distributing the SUVs to its members.

Prioritizing Delivery

Spokesperson, Akin Rotimi, clarified that priority went to female lawmakers, individuals with disabilities, and those without pending court cases. The management issued a stern circular: these vehicles are National Assembly property, not commodities for resale.

Autonomy and Responsibility

An anonymous member from the Green Chamber emphasized that proper use of these vehicles was paramount. Unlike past assemblies where cars were sold off, this time, strict guidelines prevent such practices. The Speaker’s stance reinforces this commitment to responsible stewardship.

Three Batches Arriving

Top-level sources reveal that the vehicles will arrive in three batches. Committee chairmen and members will soon have their designated SUVs at their disposal.

While controversy swirls around these acquisitions, lawmakers must balance autonomy with accountability—a delicate dance in a nation yearning for progress. 🚗💨
