A 24-year-old man, Sunday Clement, has been remanded in Olokuta Correctional Centre by an Akure Chief Magistrate Court for allegedly beheading a 30-year-old farmer, Taye Alatoye, in Ondo State.

The gruesome incident happened on September 4, 2023, at Baba Odun Camp, Ofosu in Odigbo Local Government Area of the state. Clement and Alatoye were on their way to the farm when Clement suddenly attacked Alatoye with a cutlass and severed his head.

The police arrested Clement and charged him with murder. The police prosecutor, Mary Adebayo, told the court that Clement violated Sections 316 and 319 of the Criminal Code Law of Ondo State, 2006. She also applied for his remand pending advice from the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).

Clement, who pleaded for mercy, confessed that he was under the influence of drugs when he committed the crime. He said he had taken crystal methamphetamine and marijuana before going to the farm. Also, he claimed that he heard a spirit telling him to kill Alatoye with the cutlass in his hand.

He said: “We were both going, and we greeted each other on the road path. The spirit just told me to go backwards and I did. All my eyes were blocked and I heard another voice that instructed me to cut the man with the cutlass in my hand, which I did. Immediately I did it, I came back to my senses and started crying before I was eventually apprehended by the police.”

The Chief Magistrate, Folasade Aduroja, did not take Clement’s plea due to lack of jurisdiction. She ordered his remand to the Custodial Centre and directed that the case file be duplicated and sent to the DPP for advice. She adjourned the case till November 28, 2023.
