Manchester United Top The List Of Most Expensive Squads In The World

Manchester United have the most expensive squad in the world, according to a new study by the CIES Football Observatory.

The research, which was released on Wednesday, shows that the Red Devils have spent a whopping €1.15billion (£989) on their current crop of players, surpassing their Premier League rivals Chelsea and Manchester City.

United have splashed out nearly £400m on transfer fees since Erik ten Hag took over as manager in May of last year, bringing in the likes of Casemiro, Lisandro Martinez, Tyrell Malacia, Antony, Rasmus Hojlund, Mason Mount and Andre Onana.

The Dutchman has transformed United into a formidable force, leading them to the Europa League title last season and challenging for the Premier League crown this term.

Chelsea are second on the list, having spent £975m on their squad since Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital bought the club from Roman Abramovich 18 months ago.

The Blues have broken the British transfer record twice this year, signing Enzo Fernandez for £105m in January and Moises Caicedo for £115m in August. They have also added quality players such as Hakim Ziyech, Timo Werner, Ben Chilwell and Edouard Mendy.

City are third, having spent £900m on their squad, with a quarter of that amount invested on four summer signings this year – Josko Gvardiol, Matheus Nunes, Jeremy Doku and Mateo Kovacic.

The Citizens have been the dominant force in English football in recent years, winning three consecutive Premier League titles and a historic treble last season under Pep Guardiola.

Paris Saint-Germain are the only non-Premier League club to make it into the top five, with their squad valued at £860m. The Ligue 1 champions have spent more than anyone else on their attack, with £480m invested on strikers such as Neymar, Kylian Mbappe, Mauro Icardi and Lionel Messi.
