Reps Mourn Late Afrobeats Star Mohbad, Seek Probe of His Death and Royalties

The House of Representatives on Tuesday honoured the memory of the late Afrobeats singer Ilerioluwa Aloba, popularly known as Mohbad, who died two weeks ago at the age of 27.

The lawmakers observed a moment of silence for the deceased artist at the beginning of an executive session at the resumption of plenary in Abuja.

The tribute was initiated by the member representing the Ikorodu Federal Constituency, Mr Babajimi Benson, who moved a motion of urgent importance on the matter.

Benson described Mohbad as a talented and versatile musician who had contributed immensely to the growth and development of the Nigerian entertainment industry. He said that Mohbad’s death was a huge loss to the nation and his fans across the world.

Benson also expressed concerns about the circumstances surrounding Mohbad’s death and the royalties accruing to him from his musical works. He said that there were reports that Mohbad had been involved in a fatal car accident on his way to a show in Lagos. He said that there were also allegations that Mohbad had been underpaid and exploited by his record label and that his family had not received any compensation or benefits from his estate.

Benson called for a thorough investigation into Mohbad’s death and royalties by the relevant authorities and agencies. He also urged the House to review the relevant laws guiding the entertainment industry as well as the copyright laws, to protect the rights and interests of entertainers and their families.

The motion was unanimously adopted by the House, which resolved to monitor the investigation and ensure justice for Mohbad and his family. The House also commiserated with Mohbad’s family, friends, colleagues and fans over his demise.
