Niger Republic Bans Flights From/To Nigeria

Niger Republic has escalated its diplomatic row with Nigeria by banning all flights from and to the West African giant. The move, which took effect from February 6, 2024, has caused outrage and confusion among travelers and airlines.

The Nigerien airspace management authority issued a Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) stating that only national and international commercial flights that do not land in Niger are allowed to use its airspace. However, these flights must have their surveillance and communication devices on at all times.

The NOTAM also stated that the Nigerien airspace remains closed for all military, operational and other special flights, unless they have prior authorization from the authorities. The circular clarified that this restriction only applies to Niger and Nigeria and does not affect any other NOTAM in force.

The Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA) confirmed the restriction and added that no commercial flight from Niger should overfly Nigerian airspace and vice versa. The agency said that this measure was in line with the ECOWAS resolution.

The restriction comes amid the recent withdrawal of Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger from the Economic Community Of West African States (ECOWAS). The three countries announced their decision to form their own confederation in December 2023, citing political and economic grievances.

The move has been condemned by the ECOWAS leadership and other member states, who accused the trio of violating the regional integration and cooperation principles. The ECOWAS has imposed sanctions and diplomatic pressure on the three countries to reverse their decision and rejoin the bloc.

The airspace ban is seen as a further sign of the deteriorating relations between Niger and Nigeria, who share a long and porous border. The two countries have been facing security challenges from armed groups, human trafficking, smuggling and illegal migration.

The ban is expected to have a negative impact on the trade, tourism and transportation sectors of both countries, as well as the regional stability and development. The affected airlines and passengers have expressed their frustration and disappointment over the sudden and drastic decision.

The Nigerien and Nigerian governments have not issued any official statement on the matter, nor have they indicated any willingness to resolve the dispute through dialogue. The situation remains tense and uncertain, as many wonder what the next move will be.
