Nigerian Professional Football League Launches Anti-Drug Test

NPFL Chief Operating Officer, Davidson Owumi, revealed that Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) has initiated compulsory random drug tests for players through a memo distributed to all top-flight clubs.

Owumi said that the anti-doping tests would be conducted on two players from each participating club in any given fixture, catching them by surprise.

However, The directive requires all 20 clubs to cooperate fully with operatives from the National Anti-Doping Committee, aiming to eradicate both real and rumored doping scandals within the NPFL.

In the memo, Owumi stressed the importance of unhindered cooperation, warning that Test Operatives must face no obstacles while carrying out their duties. He further stated, “A Doping Control Systems office is to be activated at all NPFL stadiums for this purpose,” indicating a strategic approach to implementing these surprise tests seamlessly.

The NPFL’s commitment to a clean and fair competition is evident as clubs are instructed to facilitate the process for the Anti-Doping Committee.

Meanwhile, The testing procedure involves collecting samples from four players, with two selected from each team based on the International Standard for Testing and Investigation and the FIFA Anti-Doping Rules.

This initiative underscores the league’s determination to maintain the highest standards of sportsmanship and to ensure that the NPFL remains free from the shadows of doping controversies.
