NNAMDI KANU AGREES TO GOVERNMENT’S TERMS OF RELEASE

Detained IPOB Leader to Comply with Conditions for Freedom

In a significant development, Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has agreed to comply with the conditions set by the Nigerian government for his release from custody, according to Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe.

Abaribe, representing Abia South Senatorial District, disclosed this after a meeting between South-East Senators and the Attorney-General of the Federation, Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), to discuss Kanu’s release. The Senator expressed optimism that the Attorney-General would influence the Federal Government to consider releasing Kanu, citing the prolonged detention’s contribution to heightened insecurity and unrest in the South-East region.

Kanu, who has been in custody since June 2021, expressed readiness to comply with any conditions set by the government for his release during a personal meeting with Senator Abaribe at the DSS headquarters.

This development follows appeals from Southeast governors and 50 members of the House of Representatives to President Tinubu to instruct the Attorney-General to terminate the terrorism-related charges against Kanu using Section 174 of the Constitution.

Kanu’s legal saga began in 2015, with a series of arrests, bail, and trials, including a Court of Appeal order for his release in October 2022, later overturned by the Supreme Court in December 2023.

The ongoing legal battle continues to attract significant attention and advocacy efforts from lawmakers and leaders in the South East region of Nigeria.
