NPFL: Referee Sanctioned After Ignoring Clear Penalty in Shooting Stars vs. Rangers Game

The Nigerian Professional Football League (NPFL) match between Shooting Stars FC and Rangers International FC, held on June 12, 2024, in Ibadan, ended in controversy due to a contentious refereeing decision.

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has since taken decisive action against Dr. Bashir Saidu, the referee at the center of the dispute.

During the intense match, which saw both teams battling fiercely for dominance, a clear penalty situation was overlooked by Dr. Saidu.

The incident occurred in the second half when a Rangers International player was brought down in the penalty area. Despite the evident foul, Dr. Saidu waved play on, sparking outrage from the Rangers bench and their supporters.

The game, which ended in 1-0 in favor of Shooting Stars left Rangers International feeling aggrieved, as they believed the missed penalty could have changed the outcome in their favor. Shooting Stars FC also acknowledged the contentious nature of the decision, with both teams agreeing that the match was overshadowed by the refereeing error.

In response to the incident, the NFF’s Refereeing Development Committee, through the Sokoto State Football Association, announced Dr. Saidu’s indefinite suspension from officiating NPFL matches.

However, the committee cited his failure to correctly identify and adjudicate the critical moment in the game, which adversely affected its outcome.

Mohammed Ameenu D., Chairman of the NFF Referees’ Committee, stated, “Dr. Saidu’s inability to make the correct call in such a clear-cut situation is unacceptable.

His decision has brought the integrity of the match into question, and we are committed to upholding the highest standards of officiating in the NPFL.”

The suspension has been communicated to key officials within the NFF, including the President and the General Secretary, underscoring the importance of the matter.

The NFF’s swift action aims to reassure clubs, players, and fans that fair play and accurate officiating are paramount in Nigerian football.

As both Shooting Stars FC and Rangers International FC look to move past the incident, the NFF’s decision serves as a reminder of the critical role referees play in the beautiful game and the importance of their decisions in maintaining the sport’s integrity.
